The kitchen has more fragile, oddly shaped and hazardous items than any other room, which is why it takes the longest to pack. A little method makes it easy.
Start early and sort
Begin with items you rarely use. Use up or give away perishables and open groceries, since they shouldn't travel long distances.
Pack by category
- Crockery and glass: wrap individually, store plates vertically in sturdy boxes
- Appliances: clean, dry and box mixers, ovens and kettles; tape cords
- Sharp items: wrap knife blades in thick paper and label clearly
- Pantry: seal liquids in bags to prevent leaks
Label and prioritise
Mark boxes fragile and by content, and keep a separate essentials box with a kettle, a few cups, plates and cutlery so you can settle in immediately at the new home.
