Transit insurance is optional with most packers and movers, but it's worth understanding before you decide to skip it.
What transit insurance covers
It covers loss or damage to your goods during loading, transport and unloading — for example, an item damaged in an accident, fire, or mishandling in transit. It typically does not cover pre-existing damage or improperly packed items you packed yourself without disclosure.
What it costs
Insurance is usually calculated as a small percentage (commonly around 3%) of the declared value of your goods. For a household move valued at Rs. 2,00,000, that's roughly Rs. 6,000 — a small price for peace of mind on high-value moves.
When it's worth it
- Intercity or long-distance moves, where transit time and risk is higher.
- Moves with valuable furniture, electronics or glass items.
- If you don't personally supervise loading and unloading.
When you can skip it
For a short local move within Bangalore, with a trusted, experienced crew and standard household items, many customers choose to move at owner's risk without insurance — this is a personal risk decision.
