GST on Packers and Movers — What You Actually Pay, Explained Simply
One of the most common questions customers ask before booking a move is: "Will GST be charged on my bill?" The honest answer is: it depends on what kind of service you take and whether you hold a GST registration. Here is how it works in practice.
The two kinds of moving services
Transportation of goods — your packed goods are carried from one city to another. Movers who transport goods operate as a Goods Transport Agency (GTA), and the service is classified under SAC 9965.
Full packing and moving service — packing with materials, labour, loading, transport, unloading and unpacking, billed as one complete service.
When GST is 0%
If you are an individual customer without a GSTIN and your job is billed as goods transportation, the bill can be raised without GST under the GTA framework. This is why many household customers receive bills that show only the moving amount, with no GST added. On such bills the service is correctly described as "Transportation" — that wording is what supports the treatment, so check for it.
When GST is charged (usually 18%)
If you are a business with a GSTIN booking a full packing-and-moving service, GST is charged on the bill (18% IGST for inter-state moves, or CGST + SGST within Karnataka), and you can claim the input tax credit in your returns. If a mover charges you GST, the bill must show the mover's GSTIN, the SAC code, and the GST amount separately — otherwise you cannot claim the credit and should ask for a corrected bill.
What to check on your moving bill
- The mover's GSTIN is printed (Laxmi Packers and Movers Bangalore: 29AHNPP8781F2ZI).
- The service description matches what you booked — "Transportation" on no-GST bills, "Packing and Moving Services" on GST bills.
- GST, if charged, is shown as a separate line, not quietly added into the moving amount.
- The total in words matches the total in numbers.
Transit insurance and GST
If you take optional transit insurance for your goods (charged as a percentage of the value you declare), it appears as a separate line on the quotation or bill. Ask for it in writing before the move if you want it.
Our practice
At Laxmi Packers and Movers Bangalore, customers without a GSTIN are billed without GST for transportation, and customers who share a GSTIN receive a proper GST bill they can claim credit on. The amount quoted to you is confirmed in writing before the move — see our Bangalore moving charges for current ranges. There are no hidden charges added later.
