Moving Insurance (Transit Insurance) — Do You Need It, and How Does It Work?
When families move expensive furniture, electronics or a car to another city, the most common worry is: "What if something breaks on the way?" Transit insurance is the answer built for exactly that risk. Here is how it works, in plain language.
What transit insurance is
Transit insurance covers your goods against damage or loss while they are being transported — during loading, the journey, and unloading. It is a separate, optional product arranged for your consignment. Your mover helps you take it and supports you through the claim, but the policy itself is what pays.
How the premium is calculated
The premium is normally a percentage of the value you declare for your goods — commonly 3% of the declared value. For example, goods declared at ₹1,00,000 carry a premium of about ₹3,000. For cars, the same principle applies on the car's declared value. You will see the insured value and the premium written clearly on your quotation before you confirm.
What is usually covered
- Damage to insured goods caused during transit
- Loss of insured items during the journey
- Damage during loading and unloading, as per the policy terms
What is not covered depends on the policy — pre-existing damage, items you packed yourself in sealed boxes, and cash and jewellery are common exclusions. Always ask what your specific policy includes before the truck leaves.
How to claim, step by step
- Note it at delivery. Check your goods at unloading and note any damage on the delivery document before signing.
- Photograph everything. Take clear photos of the damaged item and its packing.
- Inform your mover immediately — the same day — and keep your invoice, lorry receipt and insurance papers ready.
- File the claim with the insurer with the mover's support; a surveyor may inspect the damage.
- Settlement is made as per the policy terms and the declared value.
Our honest advice
- For a local move within Bangalore with ordinary furniture, many customers skip insurance — the risk window is a few hours.
- For intercity moves, high-value electronics, or a car, we recommend it. The premium is small next to the value it protects.
- Declare a realistic value. Under-declaring lowers the premium but also caps what a claim can pay.
At Laxmi Packers and Movers Bangalore, transit insurance is always optional and quoted separately — it is never added to your bill without your agreement, and we support you through the claim process if anything goes wrong. Coverage, exclusions and claim settlement are governed by the policy issued for your consignment. Please read its terms before the move.
