Packers and Movers Glossary of Terms

The moving industry has its own vocabulary, and it can be confusing first time around. Here is a plain-English glossary of the terms you'll come across when booking a move.

Booking and pricing

• Pre-move survey: the visit (in person or video) where the mover assesses your goods to give an accurate quote.
• Fixed quote: a firm, written price for the agreed scope, with no hidden charges.
• Advance: a part-payment to confirm your booking.

Transport terms

• LR / Consignment note (bilty): the document acknowledging your goods were received for transport.
• Dedicated vehicle: a full vehicle carrying only your goods.
• Part load / shared load: your goods share a vehicle with others to save cost.

Protection terms

• Transit insurance: optional cover for damage or loss during the move.
• Inventory list: the record of items packed, used to verify everything on delivery.

Service terms

• Local shifting: a move within the same city.
• Domestic / intercity: a move between cities.
• Doorstep delivery: goods delivered and unloaded at your new address.

Corporate and B2B terms

• FTL (Full Truck Load): a shipment that fills, or is billed for, an entire truck rather than sharing space with other consignments.
• LTL / Part-load: a smaller shipment that shares a vehicle with other consignments going the same route, billed by volume or weight rather than the full vehicle.
• 3PL (Third-party logistics): outsourced warehousing, inventory management and distribution handled by a logistics partner on a company's behalf.
• Rate contract: a pre-agreed pricing arrangement for a company's regular or recurring moves, instead of quoting each move individually.
• Vendor empanelment: the process by which a company adds a mover to its approved-supplier list, usually requiring GST, Udyam/MSME and other registration documents.
