A mattress is bulky and easily soiled or bent during a move. Protecting it properly keeps it hygienic and in good shape at your new home.
Use a mattress bag or cover
A dedicated mattress bag protects against dust, dirt and moisture. In its absence, wrap the mattress in clean plastic sheeting and tape it securely.
Keep it flat where possible
- Memory foam and orthopaedic mattresses should be transported flat, not folded or bent.
- Spring mattresses can be stood on edge for short moves but should not be bent sharply.
- Never place heavy boxes on top of a mattress.
Handle with two people
Mattresses are awkward to carry through doorways and stairs. Two people and a steady grip prevent it from dragging on the floor or hitting walls.
Load it correctly
Place the mattress flat against the side of the vehicle, away from sharp objects, so it stays clean and keeps its shape.
