Books look easy to pack, but they catch people out: a large box of books quickly becomes too heavy to lift and can tear or injure someone. The trick is small boxes and smart packing.
Use small, sturdy boxes
Always pack books in small boxes. A small box full of books is already heavy, while a large one becomes impossible to carry safely and is more likely to burst at the bottom.
How to pack them
- Line the box base with a layer of paper or bubble wrap.
- Pack hardbacks flat in stacks, or stand them upright with the spine against the box wall.
- Fill gaps with crushed paper so books don't shift.
- Avoid packing books spine-up, which can damage the binding.
Protect valuable books
Wrap rare, leather-bound or sentimental books individually in acid-free paper before boxing. Keep them away from box edges.
Label clearly
Mark each box 'Books - Heavy' and note the room. This warns whoever lifts it and speeds up unpacking.
