A refrigerator is one of the trickier appliances to move because the compressor and coolant need careful handling. Rushing it can lead to costly damage.
Before moving day
- Empty the fridge and defrost it at least 24 hours in advance.
- Clean and dry the interior to prevent mould and odour.
- Remove or secure loose shelves and drawers, and pack them separately.
During the move
Tape the door shut, wrap the body in moving blankets, and keep the fridge upright as much as possible. Transporting it on its side risks the compressor oil flowing into the cooling lines.
After delivery - the most important step
Let the fridge stand upright for a few hours before switching it on - longer if it was tilted during transport. This allows the compressor oil to settle and prevents damage.
